Jacob Plattenberger [Parents] was born on 3 Jul 1776 in Nazareth Twp., Northampton Co., PA. He died on 2 Mar 1854 in Stroud Twp., Monroe Co., PA. Jacob married Katharina Hill.
Jacob Plattenberger's first two children were born and baptized in Nazareth Twp. but his third child was born in Smithfield Twp. That places Jacob's move north around 1800-1803. Deeds of his son John show that Jacob received a deed from Daniel Brodhead, an early Monroe Co. settler. John's deed further says Jacob's deed was on file in the Northampton Co. Courthouse at Easton PA, but no record has ever been found.
The 1810 census lists Jacob's family in Smithfield Twp. although the 1820 and later census says he lived in Stroud Twp. Monroe Co. Fire maps show the location of Jacob's farm to be right on the border of Stroud and Smithfield Twps. It is believed the switch in designations is a change in boundaries
rather than Jacob's family moving. The 1850 maps show Jacob's house just south of Analomink, and north of Brushy Mountain Road, bordered on the west by the Brodhead Creek, and the Smithfield Twp. line in the east. A second house closer to the Smithfield Twp. border is shown behind Jacob's and was built by his son John. The road to this house connects Brushy Mountain Road in the south and Wooddale Road in the north. In 1994 the land was bought and turned into the Blue Mountain Lake Development.
Ledgers of the Stodgell Stokes general store show that both Jacob and his son John had accounts there. The transactions are primarily barter; cider, woven cloth, and eggs in exchange for mostly flour and sugar.
In the 1850 Census, Jacob Plattenberger was listed as a "gentleman". (ie. retired) in Stroud Twp., Monroe Co., PA. (1850 census, microfilm roll #798, Monroe Co., PA, Stroud Twp.)
The East Stroudsburg Jeffersonian Newspaper lists his death in 1854. No burial place is given, and none has ever been found. The Analomink Methodist Church, where Jacob's son John and several of his grandchildren are buried was not built until 1859. Since no record has been found at churches in the area, it is likely he was buried on his own farm. If so, much of the farm was washed away during the flood of 1955 and his grave will probably never be found.
